What is the best option for you and your gutters?
As a homeowner, you know the importance of regular gutter cleaning to keep your roof, foundation and surrounding landscape in tip-top shape. But should you go with a professional for the job, or tackle it yourself? You can save some cash doing it on your own; however, if you lack the basic equipment to pull it off, you could end up making more work for yourself than it’s worth – or worse, get hurt. Let’s take a look at some pros and cons of hiring a professional gutter cleaning professional vs. doing it yourself. We’ll also give you some gutter cleaning tips along the way.

CLEANING THE GUTTERS YOURSELF
Cons: According to the National Safety Council, falls in the home send nearly nine million people to the ER each year. While some of those falls are relatively minor, involving slips down stairs, others are more serious, involving falls from roofs and ladders. Homes with just one story are fairly easy to clean when it comes to gutters, but if you have a two-story house or higher, you’re putting yourself at risk when you get up on that ladder. If you do decide to clean your own gutters, take the proper safety precautions and use ladder stabilizers and harnesses. Another con to the DIY approach is the time you’re investing in the task. If you work full time and barely have time to spend with your family, is gutter cleaning really what you want to be doing on the weekend?
Pro: If you’re the handy type and don’t mind spending your Saturday cleaning out the gutters, then by all means go for it! Just make sure you have all the right equipment, such as safety equipment and extendable ladder with stabilizers. You’ll save money by doing the job yourself and you can do it on your own time table.
PROFESSIONAL GUTTER CLEANERS
Con: You have to pay for a professional to come out and clean your gutters, which can get even more pricey if a troublesome issue is detected at the same time and more work needs to be done, such as repairing or replacing a portion of the gutter. This can also be a good thing, though, because these issues are brought to your attention sooner rather than later so they don’t become worse over time.
Pro: For the money, you are making an investment in your home’s value and functionality. Having a pro come out for the job gives you peace of mind knowing it’s getting done right, in a timely manner, safely and correctly. With a pro cleaning your gutters, you can turn your attention to more important things, like sitting out by the pool with a drink in your hand!
Cleaning your gutters should never fall to the wayside. Make sure you have this done at least once in the spring and once in the fall. Scoop out the debris and do a quick inspection to ensure the water run-off is directed correctly, there are no rust spots and the gutters are securely fastened to the home.
